  • Completely revised and updated reference for pheasant hunters
  • Guidance on making the best use of pointing dogs and advice on guns, gear, and ammo
  • Includes a variety of pheasant recipes

In this fully revised second edition, Steve Grooms shows why pheasant hunting is still one of the most exciting and rewarding ways to spend a day with your dog and a gun. Full of essential information for beginners and plenty of wisdom for more seasoned hunters, the book explains how to identify a good gun dog, what the well-equipped pheasant hunter needs before heading out, and how to prepare your body and mind for the hunt. Also included is advice on reading the landscape and evaluating hunting pressure so that you have the best chance of bagging the bird. Though pheasant were until recently dismissed as easy prey, Grooms champions the bird as a quick-witted and unpredictable target, and those who recognize the sport for what it is-challenging, absorbing, and exhilarating-will find this book a vital reference.

"Author clearly knows pheasant hunting, and I really got a lot out of the discussion of chokes and loads.

Occasionally came off as smug, and the bit about global warming and pheasant hunting was weapons grade stupid. Otherwise highly recommended."

    • I had been upland bird hunting for a decade before I purchased
Steve's first revision. I bought this already knowing that it was the text book of pheasant hunting. The man hunts like one needs to hunt if you are going to have any success in contemporary uplands. The insight is that of a specialist. There are many authors that play in the outdoors and several that hunt a myriad of creatures while professing to be an expert of each. Steve has spent a lifetime as intimately involved with the subject as possible. He has the ability to inform while telling a story as vivid as the hunt itself. If you are beginning or wondering how you can improve your odds on this clever bird, look no further.
    • A great reference book on how to hunt wild pheasants in North America. I will be referring back to it frequently, until I have it memorized. The author advocates observing, then thinking like a pheasant. He describes different kinds of cover and how best to hunt them. He also provides advice on locating pheasants early, mid, and late season. I hope to be able to try out a few of the recipes for preparing pheasant.
    • Author clearly knows pheasant hunting, and I really got a lot out of the discussion of chokes and loads.

Occasionally came off as smug, and the bit about global warming and pheasant hunting was weapons grade stupid. Otherwise highly recommended.
    • This was the second book on Pheasant hunting that I had read (A Pheasant Hunter's Notebook was the first one) I really enjoyed this book as much as the other. The two really complement each other well in fact. There are, of course, places where the book overlap... but I still found both books enjoyable and informative.
    • I've been pheasant hunting off and on for 25 years, this book has both confirmed what I knew and contradicted what I thought I knew. I do have some new tactics for next season and that alone makes this book worth it. I think I'll buy one for every hunting partner, maybe they'll stop slamming doors and scaring the birds!
    • The author gives solid advice gear towards novice hunters. The book covers pheasant habits to dogs to hunting strategies. Plus, its a quick read.
    • very informative
    • Book in good condition as promised!
