"Just returned from a three-week trip to Greece, lugging this book, Frommer's and Fodor's among us. If you're just going to Athens, the Peloponnese, Santorini, Mykonos and Hydra, Steves' books is by FAR superior to the other options. If you're going to other small islands or the Meteora (highly recommended!), this book plus internet research would have been sufficient. Take a Crete-specific guide if you're going there. In order of usefulness, Rick Steves' is by far the #1 choice. Frommer's would be my distant second choice. We hardly opened Fodor's."

  • I wish, I had actually bought the book much earlier then why I did. We (family, kids) went to Greece earlier this summer wanting to experience the history, archeology and a bit of the Aegean islands experience. I started with the routine research on the web. This book had all the information that once can think of and a solid foundation.

Caution (1) As the title suggests, its for Athens and the Peloponnese. Its not if you are only looking for an exhaustive report on all Greek islands. (2) some of the pricing of museum tickets etc. are outdated.

Now the Great Stuff The guide covers very generously Athens city, and then Peloponnese (Nafplio, Epidavrus, Mycenea, Olympia, Kardamyli, Monemvasia). Then it covers Delphi, and the 3 islands of Hydra, Mykonos and Santorini. The introduction section covers basics of visiting a foreign country (e.g. money, currency, mobile phone, safety, language norms, Rick's tips on his back door travel philosophy and travelling as a local). I particularly found the maps, Rick's suggested walking tours and the best of all his tips on what to do based on how much time you have, the most helpful. I paired reading this book, with watching clips of his Greece program on Hulu. Our trip to Greece went flawlessly and we had a fabulous time. Our trip included (Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Naflion, Epidaurus, Santorini and Paros. Thanks to the tips and research founded on this travel guide.-- highly recommended.
  • I got introduced to Rick Steves through his "Rick Steves Europe" shows on Hulu. I have always loved his shows as they are informative and gave me travel wanderlust. After deciding to take a solo trip to Greece I started to look for travel guides. When I saw that the "Rick Steves Greece" book had the highest ratings, I opted to purchase that book instead of my usual Frommer's or Lonely Planet. When traveling on my own, I like to research information on each local city/town, the types of activities I can do while I'm there, familiarizing myself with the hotels in the area, where they are located and how they are rated, as well as helpful information on how to get to a specific destination using local transportation. I then build my own itinerary around where I want to go on which date, the things I want to do while I'm there and where I will be staying. Unfortunately the "Rick Steves Greece" book did not provide me with the type of information I wanted. I found that this could be considered more of a "guidebook" where Rick literally crafts an itinerary **for you**, complete with instructions on which site to visit in recommended order, which direction to head towards, what site you could expect to see in front of you and how long the entire self-tour is expected to take. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, it just wasn't what I wanted. If you're the type of person who hates planning and likes all of the details sorted out for you to the point where you quite literally show up and follow instructions, Rick Steves guidebooks are perfect for you. If you're like me and prefer a travel reference where the facts are presented to you so you can craft your own itinerary, you're better off sticking to the traditional Frommer's or Lonely Planet. I still enjoy watching Rick Steves shows, though. o)
  • I've traveled around the USA a great deal, and have never seen a travel guide I liked enough to buy, let alone use. When I decided it was time to see some of the overseas spots I wanted to see, I chose somewhere warm that I could see for less than a thousand dollars, and with the help of Orbitz I booked a trip to Greece. A friend pointed me toward Rick Steves, so I ordered this guide. I found it to be concise, helpful and informative. It provides maps and down to earth suggestions. I highly recommend this, BEFORE planning your trip. Unfortunately, I ended up booking a hostel far from the Acropolis area, so I had to rebook close to what I wanted to see. But with Rick Steves to guide me, I'm sure I'll have a great trip.

  • We basically did the entire circuit in summer 2017, and everything was pretty much spot-on accurate, including prices. The book is not a listing of things you might want to see, but rather a complete itinerary for a 2-week trip. Rick Steves basically picks and chooses for you, hitting the highlights (as chosen by him) and ignoring everything else. He's very up-front about this. We supplemented with TripAdvisor, and did small detours to the mountains above Sparta and then to Ancient Messene, both fabulous. We cut out Delphi and Hydra. The only recommendations that fell flat were those for hotel and restaurant in Olympia. (There ARE several lovely restaurants on the 2 streets parallel and on either side of the main drag.). But this is being picky. The book made our summer. Rick, we're eagerly awaiting your book on "Greece, Athens and North" ; )
  • This is a "must-read" for travelers to Greece. Rick Steves provides all of the essential information needed by visitors to Greece. The book includes maps and guides to many of the major attractions in Greece. He prioritizes attractions and provides recommendations on how to make the most out of a traveler's limited time. The maps include walking tours for Athens and a number of small towns. The maps are particularly useful as they show where a number of buildings and churches are located that are hard to find on Google Maps. Rick also provides the reader with a "poor-man's" guide to Greek mythology. Entertaining and useful
