Patricia Volk’s delicious memoir lets us into her big, crazy, loving, cheerful, infuriating and wonderful family, where you’re never just hungry–your starving to death, and you’re never just full–you’re stuffed. Volk’s family fed New York City for one hundred years, from 1888 when her great-grandfather introduced pastrami to America until 1988, when her father closed his garment center restaurant. All along, food was pretty much at the center of their lives. But as seductively as Volk evokes the food, Stuffed is at heart a paean to her quirky, vibrant relatives her grandmother with the “best legs in Atlantic City”; her grandfather, who invented the wrecking ball; her larger-than-life father, who sculpted snow thrones when other dads were struggling with snowmen. Writing with great freshness and humor, Patricia Volk will leave you hungering to sit down to dinner with her robust family–both for the spectacle and for the food.

Stuffed Adventures of a Restaurant Family Patricia Volk 9780375724992 Books Reviews

  • Patricia Volk comes from an amazing family full of passionate, aggressive, intense people. There's Aunt Ruthie, a little old lady who looks sweet but has a tounge like a razor, Aunt Gertie who married badly but proudly carried on, Granny Ethel who was a great beauty but a terrible mother, grandfather Jacob who came from Europe as a boy, made a fortune and fell in love with one look. In between the chapters on her relatives Volk drops a few mentions of the restaraunt that kept the family going and settles a few scores. Like her Aunt Lil she remembers everything and tells all.

You wouldn't want to know these people-- except for Nana Polly and Audrey most were really dreadful folks-- and you certainly wouldn't want to work for any of them but it's a fascinating peep into a world most of us are totally unfamiliar with. If you like books about New York, or foodie books or just love a juicy memoir Stuffed will satisfy.
  • So much of "Stuffed" was familiar to me that from the beginning I couldn't believe I didn't know this family, nor, when growing up near NYC and staying with my grandparents at 19 E 88th St, that I never visited the restaurant! I don't remember my family as being nearly as fascinating as Patricia's, but was absolutely delighted when I read that she went to the same camp as I did and also attended the same dancing school. I'm sure she's quite a bit younger than I, but her recollections awakened so many of my own that I could hardly put the book down. If you don't like anecdotal writing, then this isn't the book for you, but the piecemeal approach, coupled with a keen eye (and voracious memory), fitfully paced, made me feel right at home. Loved it!
  • If you like family yarns mixed with your recipes, you will feel "Full" when done with htis book. A bit maudlin, but a good glimpse of a specific lifestyle that has gone the way of history.
  • Storyline was great, fell in love with each character family member! If you're a foodie, eat at many restaurants, have good table manners and are a New Yorker, or Love New York - you will really enjoy this book!
  • Great book. Perfect.
  • Fun, laugh out loud read!!
  • I bought this after reading Volk's newly-published novel, which I also enjoyed. Good writing through-out this book. I just ordered the audio version.
  • Fabulous book for lovers of food, New York, and families. Two heart-breaking chapters, the rest pure joy. I even bought a copy for my daughter because I wanted to keep mine to read again.
