Why is Autism Spectrum Disorder so misunderstood in girls and women and why do so many go under the radar without the support that they need? This practical guide explains the unique issues that affect females with autism and provides tools and strategies that girls, women and their families can use in day-to-day life.

Following the story of Alison, a girl diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, through both childhood and adulthood, we get an inside view of the challenges that girls and women with autism face. Straightforward information and advice is provided on key topics including

· social skills and communication
· how to overcome bullying
· sensory issues and food sensitivity
· the need for routine
· perceptions of gender
· and physiological changes.

Essential reading for parents of daughters on the spectrum, as well as girls and women who carry the diagnosis themselves.

"As a child psychiatrist who works with children on the spectrum and their families, I can't recommend this book enough. I hand it out to the parents of my patients. It so poignantly and intimately brings us into the life of a girl or woman on the spectrum, through the eyes of Alison, from her childhood to her adulthood -- through the gamut of issues of negotiating and surviving the NT social and work worlds to the personal challenges of puberty and menopause. The chapter on bullying was so personal that it brought me to tears. It's compassion inspires a professional like me to be a better clinician. And the writing is so beautifully clear in the insight and explanations it gives, that my tween patients can understand it as well as their parents and providers. I can't recommend it enough!"

Life on the Autism Spectrum A Guide for Girls and Women Karen McKibbin Tony Attwood Books Reviews

  • This is a wonderful book that is easy to read through, especially when your life is busy. As someone who encounters teenagers a lot in my work (I work in education), this book has been a huge help in giving me a better understanding of several girls I work with who are on the autism spectrum. It also provides tools and other ideas that I can try out with them too, which have helped me to connect better with these girls.

This book is great for anyone, especially people who works with or would live with a girl or women with ASD. It's easy to read and understand and includes the voices of many women who live with ASD every day. This book has really helped me understand what it's like to live with some of their struggles that I would never otherwise really think about or understand. I have already recommended it to several teachers in my area too!
  • This book served more to confirm what I've experienced throughout my 62 years rather than provide me with a lot of new info, but it was still a good read. I just wish it had been written 60 years ago so my mother would have been able to understand why I would NEVER be able to conform to her desired standard of behavior, dress, or popularity and possibly offer her an explanation as to why I wasn't even interested in being what she called "normal." It would have saved both of us a lot of grief.

  • This book was very informative regarding the struggles Aspie females encounter. It's amazing how much they need to navigate on a day-to-day basis. THEN throw menstruation into the mix and things can really become dangerous as these young women feel totally void of control.

I've learned a great deal from this book and will recommend it to parents of ASD children at my school.
  • Hard to read. The actual story line was great but the guidance is bland and due to dryness of the writing it’s hard to stay engaged.
